Wilburpalooza Kicks Off Fall 2015 Semester

Wilbur Wright College kicked off its third annual Welcome Week on September 8th, 2015. Welcome Week has become a tradition at Wright, introducing students to the different resources, clubs, activities, etc., that Wilbur Wright has to offer. Welcome Week is coordinated by Katie Ordinario and her activities team.

The idea of Welcome Week came from the City Colleges of Chicago’s chancellor who wanted Wilbur Wright College to have a formal way of welcoming the students to their new academic home. Katie Ordianario said, “Welcome Week is about establishing the ‘Wright’ connections academically and socially in order to assist students with tools to be successful.”

Welcome Week takes a lot of preparation from all of the Student Service Departments, but Ordinario says that seeing students smile, having fun and making connections is what makes it all worth it.

The first day of Welcome Week was Wilburpalooza, which was set up in the Events Building and had a live DJ, tables for all the clubs, a raffle, bingo to win a Subway sandwich, create your own music video, basketball, Jenga, photo booth, and other games and events.

The clubs that were Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa, Honor Society, Filipino American Club, Stage Wright, Write in Your Corner, Pre Nursing, Pre Pharmaceutical, American Chemical Society, Campus Ministry, Open Mic Club, and the Wright Side. The services that were there were the Gateway and advisors, Career Planning, Library, and Veteran Services.

Later on the day there were tests for anxiety and stress, and later on in the evening there was Family Appreciation Night.

On Wednesday, there was Tour de Success, Resume Writing Workshop, Advisor meet and greets, and at the Humboldt Park location there was a Thesis Statement Writing Workshop.

On Thursday there was the Wright Start table, a blood drive hosted by Life Source, the Disability Access Center Orientation, and another Thesis Statement Writing Work shop in Write in Your Corner.

The biggest and main attraction for students is Wilburpalooza. This year was the biggest turnout ever for Welcome Week; over one thousand students came. Every year the Welcome Week event gets bigger, better, and more students come.
