Anime Club Celebrates Year of the Monkey

The Chinese New Year is the greatest and the most important annual event for Chinese people. The past February 11th, the Anime Club brought for the first time a piece of Asia to the campus of Wilbur Wright College celebrating the year of the Monkey.

The club Vice President Kim Le shared that the purpose of the celebration was to share with Asian community some of their tradition and for those who were not aware of Chinese culture had the opportunity to experience the traditional activities and learned about their Chinese Zodiac.

The atmosphere was nice with a good crowd of people gathering, eating, chatting and exploring about their Chinese zodiac available in a pamphlet that had a list of the animals and the corresponding of each character. The Jackie Chan Adventures was playing during the event because the zodiacs are presented in the show. Since this is the year of the Monkey, the decoration consist in monkey shaped balloons prompted up on red covered tables.

In the beginning of session, the Filipino-American Club performed a short but entertaining Tinkling dance by the members Johanna Velada, Chester Salcado, Ron DelRosano, and Mia Villasenor.

Honoring the tradition, the Anime Club passed around the Ang Pao, The Anime Club president and organizer of the celebration, Anh Liu stated that is a “red pocket given to children to protect them and give them luck for the rest of the year.” also, delicious food was brought from the China Chef restaurant from down the street of Narragansett. for the dessert there were fortune cookies, and Asian Candies such as Pocky and green tea flavored candy.

The Anime club receives anyone who wants to express themselves, even if you know nothing about Anime, just has to have good ideas. The meetings are from 3:30 to 4:30 on Monday in the room S130, interested in joining contact the Club President Ana Ceja.
