The Voices of Wisdom

Interested in reading philosophy and expressing philosophical thoughts? “Reading for Wisdom” might be the right fit for you. Hosted by Professor Kathy Calabrese and Professor Adrian Guiu, “Reading for Wisdom” provides students with an opportunity to share ideas, to think through ideas, and most importantly, to develop a lifelong pursuit of wisdom. There is no need to worry about paying for books because free articles are always provided for participants of the event. The discussions are not ordinary conversations; rather, they are an exploration of ideas that are of great significance to our lives. The topics that are covered during the gathering range from learning methods of dealing with “toxic people” to knowing the different aspects of morality.

When asked why students should be engaged in such discussions, Professor Guiu begins his response by identifying the benefits of engaging in group discussions, proposing that the process of thinking and reflecting on others’ ideas can allow an individual to see completely.

“I love to give students a chance to say their perspectives. At the same time, I also want them to realize that wisdom is knowing what they don’t know. Reality is complex. There are no easy answers. If the answers are too easy, then there’s something wrong with the answers. It is important to learn to see the complexity of the world and appreciate it,” Guiu said.

Additionally, Professor Calabrese believes that the discussions can help set a meaningful foundation to an individual’s pursuit of purpose in life. “Students are often focusing on skills they can put on their resume”, she said, “but behind our work and our decisions, we should have philosophy. This shapes what we do.”

Indeed, the contemplation of our motives deepens the meaning of the execution of our actions. “Reading for Wisdom” provides a space for the development of philosophical thinking. If you are interested, join the discussions that take place every Monday at 11p.m. in room s100. This is where the voices of wisdom unite, where thoughtful minds come together to flourish and bloom.
