Wright College is splashing and kicking down gender barriers with the first ever Co-Ed Synchronized Swimming Club, the Sea Stars. The late Kay Curtis, a Wright College faculty member from the 1930s, was the founder of the club and is credited as the overall creator of the sport of Synchronized Swimming. Kay Curtis, as described by coach Cathy Goodwin, is said to have been the “swimming guru”.
Synchronized swimming, also known as Sea Stars, at Wright is meant to meet the needs and goals of all swimmers; to create a diverse environment for individuals of all genders and sexual orientations. Sea Stars is not a class that provides college credit and it runs for 7 week sessions.
Instructor Goodwin states, “It is not a swimming class, but a family”. With that being said the Wright College swimming family is always looking to be expanded. The Synchronized swimming team 2016 featured students as well as community members of all ages and of different swimming abilities.
This fall, Sea Stars Chicago began their preparation for the 20th annual water show: “Mermaids on Duty”. The event took place on Oct 22 and included solos, duets, trios as well as precision strokes and geometric shapes.
Synchronized swimming teaches poise and confidence, trust, and is a stress release for many. In addition, the value of teamwork is learned along with individuality. Strength is acquired when swimming in sync with the music and other swimmers.
Wright College swimmers recreate and create choreography for their performances. The performances can include props such as top hats, canes, and hula hoops. Much of the practice is done outside of the pool for moves that incorporate gymnastics and is then tried in the water. Non gymnastic moves are also incorporated such as swing dancing, diving moves, and drama. The skills learned and achieved through Synchronized Swimming can be showcased through the hard work and dedication of each swimmer at Wright College.
If you are interested in competitive swimming, the performing arts, or a combination of both then synchronized swimming is for you. Contact Instructor Cathy Good via email goodwincathy@hotmail.com or try a class with no commitment on Monday 8:00 pm or Friday 9:30 am.
