North Side Housing (NSH) and Supportive Services aids both men and women in attempts to end homelessness through providing housing and other supportive services.
Allen Loomis, a Wilbur Wright College student that works that with the NSH told The Wright Times that the organization is closing, "It's because of funding, not all of our funding comes from Chicago, but a good portion of it does. The city can no longer provide that portion come the end of the year."
According to the NSH website, 66% of the funding for the program came from the State of Illinois, through the City of Chicago. This is what essentially feeds their other programs such as temporary housing in which many people are in, this is partly due to the state budget crisis. NHS also released a press statement in regards to its future closure: “we will stop accepting new referrals to the Interim Housing (shelter) Program on October 1st; we will finish transitioning 70 current participants to other programs by December 23rd; and the shelter staff has been notified that they will be laid off at the end of the year.”
“We still have other programs that will be continuing like the temporary housing but we won’t have that short-term shelter.” The short-term shelter is where people can come in, get vetted through the program, along with a temporary stay until they can talk with social worker to get their lives back on track.
Even though all of this happening, North Side Housing isn’t going anywhere. They’re still helping other people, through their various other programs such as the temporary housing and supportive services and you can get involved too. If you want to help this organization, feel free to check out their website where you can donate or volunteer. They even have an Amazon wish list where you can help buy cloths, laundry detergent, soap, and even air mattresses. Their website is www.northsidehousing.org where their contact information is located.
