Wright's Leaders of Promise

Yaryna Khlibovych and Leopoldo Gomez, winners of the Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship

Coca-Cola Scholarship Leaders of Promise is a Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) scholarship available only to PTK student-members enrolled in community colleges. Two hundred scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded to students based on their merits and applications.

Wilbur Wright College had two students win scholarships: Leopoldo Gomez and Yaryna Khlibovych. Both students have a strong desire to be “Leaders of Promise” in the future; Leopoldo is President of PTK Omega Chapter and Yaryna is the President of the Business Club.

After months of waiting for the final decision, Leopoldo and Yaryna were thrilled to discover that they were winners. ‘I was really surprised when I received an email about winning the scholarship. The results were announced almost five months after I applied. So, it was definitely unexpected for me,” said Yaryna.

Winning a scholarship is difficult, but there are ways to increase the chances of winning aside from having a good GPA, such as volunteering or participating in a club. “I think I won this scholarship because of the opportunities I’ve been given to get involved with Wright College. Through Phi Theta Kappa, the American Society Club, and my job as a tutor, I have been provided insight into what it means to be a leader,” said Leopoldo.

Scholarship providers were looking for motivated students who are committed to making a difference. Yaryna thinks she won the scholarship because she is devoted to her studying, community and motivation to succeed. She said, “I think my strength is my motivation. I set the goals and keep moving forward to achieve them.”
