The Alliance Club has been revived and revamped! On Oct 26, the very first meeting was held in which a dozen people attended including students, several SGA members, and advisors Dean of Instruction, James Howley, and Psychology professor, Maritza Cordero.
The Alliance Club meeting attracted a diverse group of people in which the consensus of the group was to have the Alliance Club be a safe space for LGBTQ and straight allies to discuss sensitive issues in an accepting, judgment-free environment.
Newly elected president, Nicholas Matos, emphasized this goal by mentioning the unwanted notion of having to “revive” the club ever again in the future—the club has resurfaced and its members intend to reacquaint it to the Wright community and keep it that way.
A reception followed in the Atrium, where the Alliance Club provided snacks and refreshments in celebration of the LGBTQ+ History month. The Alliance club has just begun its journey, yet again, but with a new year comes new perspectives.
On Oct 31, a student-welcomed LGBTQ+ 101 informational session was held. Advisors Howley and Cordero lead a heartwarming conversation with attending students. LGBTQ resources, including a terminology packet and Chicago area LGBTQ organizations’ contact information, were given to the students.
President Matos wishes to focus less on it being a “club” and more of a coalition. Professor Cordero emphasizes the LGBTQ and ally communities to be “together in solidarity”, mentioning the Wellness Center as an option for any student who needed to speak to someone. She also encourages everyone to be knowledgeable in LGBTQ issues. Being all for tolerance, Cordero says “We need to be together.”
The Alliance Club has begun taking Wright by a storm of community and togetherness. All students are welcomed to attend their weekly Wednesday meetings at 1:30 PM in room S-134.
