A blue-haired girl named, Coraline Jones, will pave her way through Wilbur Wright`s main theatre stage.
On March 15 through March 25, Wilbur Wright stage productions will be presenting Coraline the Musical. Heather Mall will be playing the role of Coraline, alongside a variety of fellow Wright students playing other essential characters. Coraline the Musical will be based off the book, written by Neil Gaimen, and the musical written by playwright David Greenspan. Coraline`s story takes place in an abandoned foreign home. Her parents neglect her and are not aware of the inner demons their child has developed from moving into their new home.
Coraline manages to escape her dark reality at home by entering a concealed portal to a new world and way of life, however, this seemingly perfect reality isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
“A lot of the symbolism that is in the book and in the movie finds itself in the play, musical: the idea about scary things sort of getting into our mind and taking over our mind… the idea of her feeling kind of neglected. said Patrick Ham, director of Coraline the Musical. “Her parents don’t pay too much attention to her so she enters this other world where everything is spectacular! However, Coraline begins to realize that something is not quite right. In the book, in the movie, and the musical, she’s like, “This is weird, I like it or I think I like it but it’s weird and so I need to explore more.”
Ham has planned to unveil the idiosyncratic personalities Coraline has yet to discover herself. The scenery of Coraline the Musical is expected to have scintillating lights and dark overcast hues.
“I want the world and the ‘other world’ to be very distinct. They describe Coraline’s normal world as rainy, overcast, and kind of grey. That`s metaphoric. That's how she feels,” said Ham. “She’s been forced to move into this foreign place. Her life is a little grey and hazy right now, and she’s trying to figure it out. When she steps into this other world everything is going to be bright, vibrant, and saturated with the lights and costumes. They're going to be kinda over the top!”
“Don't let the things you’re afraid of get the better of you,” said Ham. “Figure it out and trust your instincts. I think all of those ideas are definitely a unit and we’ll see which ones come out.”
