When waiting for your next class to start, it’s the perfect time to chill out and watch some Netflix.
However, Netflix being blocked under the CCC WiFi has caused various complaints by students who have extra time in-between classes to relax.
“Not everyone is going to try to watch inappropriate things, and I think stinks that I can’t watch what I want to watch because of what a few people might do,” said Wright College student Valentina Ospina. If this is a mature environment, then why is Netflix blocked? The limited Wifi resources would slow down classroom activities if Netflix was allowed for recreational use.
“Netflix is still available for educational uses upon faculty and staff request, however, it is not available for non-instructional purposes via the City Colleges network. Video streaming through Netflix and other platforms consumes a lot of bandwidth, and excessive streaming was causing the City Colleges network to slow down, affecting internet usage for students and classroom instruction,” said Anthony Gamboa, Wright College Information Technology Director.
This executive level decision was made a few years back because of the negative effects of the high amounts of bandwidth utilization and effective use of limited internet resources.
Whenever a person uses the free CCC Wifi and agree to the terms and conditions they join the group of students and faculty members that are on it. This is what lead to the decision to block Netflix and ‘the need to responsibly use limited internet resources’.
There are other ways to relax before your class. Just because Netflix isn’t available doesn't mean that you're at a loss for entertainment.
