CCC Chancellor: Mr. Juan Salgado

The Chancellor of the City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) is no longer an open position as Juan Salgado has been chosen to be former chancellor Cheryl Hyman’s successor.

Hyman served as (CCC) chancellor for six years. However, a rift between Hyman and faculty members due to the policies and overall management style of Hyman resulted in a vote of no confidence.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the decision for a vote of no confidence was come to because of the lack of collaboration on her behalf after faculty reached out to her about their concerns.

According to an email from the CCC chairman, Salgado is an advocate for immigrants overcoming barriers in the workplace and has served as President and CEO of Instituto del Progreso Latino, a citizen preparation program, for 16 years. In the program, teachers present information in which students are able to establish meaning based on their own experiences. It is also a nationally recognized model for learning.

The new Chancellor’s duties include helping address the challenges students and faculty members face as well as maintaining the ongoing success of CCC.

According to the CCC Board of Trustees, the City Colleges of Chicago Board is made up of seven voting members serving three-year terms appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council of Chicago. The Board includes one student trustee elected from one of the Colleges through a campus-wide election. Our student trustee, Melanny Buitron, is part of the Wright family.

“I had the honor of representing the student voice on the selection committee for the new CCC Chancellor. I was given the opportunity to ask questions on behalf of students in the interview process, and I am more than confident that Juan Salgado will transition seamlessly and do a great job for CCC,” said Buitron.

It is important that Wright students as well as all students of CCC are informed and updated on decisions that affect us directly. Many students are not aware of the significance and role of Chancellor and Provost.

The Provost’s responsibilities include district-wide planning and supports the aspects of teaching and learning on behalf of student success. The Provost reports directly to the Chancellor of the City Colleges. There has been no word on who will be appointed as Provost.

Salgado’s experience, abilities, and accomplishments are going to be put to good use as the semester, and the future of CCC, continues.
