One Student’s Trash is another Student’s Treasure

As the Trex plastic film recycling challenge makes its way towards Wright College, the Wright College Environmental Club is getting ready to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

The plastic film challenge has annually encouraged hundreds of schools across the nation to recycle discarded items such as plastic wrap, ziplock bags, and plastic bags.

“There are lots of websites that can help all of us go green,” explained Environmental Club President Bethany Salgado. “To help with this, I look for things that appeal to our club and see how it would affect people and the environment.”

Trex Outdoor Furniture is one of the largest recyclers of plastic in North America, and uses more than 1.5 billion plastic bags each year to make beautiful composite products.

Trex will honor schools around the country for their recycling efforts should they meet the goal to collect 500 pounds of plastic within six months.

That measures to approximately the size of a 454 Big Block Chevy engine, and our Environmental Club President needs your help. For the winning school, Trex will donate a high performance composite bench. Just imagine sitting down and studying for your next test knowing that you helped make a difference.

The Environmental Club has also been hard at work with other activities and events. On Oct. 26, club members could be found on the first floor of the science building selling baked goods to raise money to send solar panels to Puerto Rico.

It’s not too late to repair the damage that big companies have done to our beautiful home. If you spot a green and white bin on campus with signage that reads“Plastic Bags” please do not hesitate to become Earth-friendly and discard those unwanted materials. Together we can make a difference for a cleaner future and obtain a new piece of furniture for our school.
