Convenient food choices for busy students

The hectic day to day life of a Wright College student can sometimes keep you from making healthy lifestyle choices. Luckily, there are a few places that can keep you on the path to a more balanced lifestyle.

The Fannie’s Bakery stand and the Fresh Farms salad machine are great locations where students can make convenient choices on breakfast or lunch foods. With a plethora of food choices, students can get the variety they desire on short notice and for a good price.

The Fresh Farms salad machine offers a wide assortment of salads and a varying menu. Included with the salad is dressing and students have the option of adding meat to their salads for an extra fee. The machine can be found towards the back of the cafe eating area on the first floor of the Science Building.

“It’s a pretty solid option,” said Wright College student Nicole Lozinski. “I don’t like that the meat is extra but the variety keeps me coming back. The salads themselves are kind of expensive but they’re always available. There are nutrition facts on the salad containers which makes it a good option for people who care about what’s in their food and where it comes from. I feel that every person should try it at least once.”

If a salad doesn’t cut it for your craving, the Fannie’s bakery stand offers a wide assortment of baked goods for students to enjoy on the way, in between, or after class.

Fannie’s bakery is open Monday through Thursday from 2 to 5pm and offers everything from coffee to scones. Their top selling items so far are coffee, cinnamon buns, and chocolate chip marble cookies.

"We heard that Wright was looking for a local business to offer snacks and coffee when their cafe closed so we reached out to provide that service,” said Stephanie Rybandt, owner of Fannie’s. “Our mission is to promote craft and community so setting up a stand in a community college like Wright perfectly aligns with our goal.”

Fannie’s prides themselves in their purchase of products and ingredients from local businesses such as Stiver’s, a coffee shop located on Chicago’s south side. Whenever you buy from Fannie’s, you know that you are helping people in local businesses and further supporting Fannie’s mission of creating community and outreach.

Other Fannie’s locations include their bakery shop in Eisenhower Library at 4613 N. Oketo Avenue and their biggest location at Montrose and Milwaukee, where occasional poetry slams and open mic nights are available.

The food opportunities for on-the-go college students can seem slim most of the time, but by taking a little time to choose your next bite you can end up with a wholesome snack or a new community.
